There are two concurrent studies which have each pointed to the issue of gender. The first is a qualitative study by Daley (forthcoming) which involved life-history interviews with 61 young people accessing youth drug treatment services inVictoria (42% female).

Youth AOD Screening and Assessment project
Youth AOD Screening and Assessment project

Partnership between Turning Point and YSAS
Funding body: Victorian Department of Health 

The aim of this project is to enhance youth AOD treatment accessibility and treatment planning by improving screening and assessment tools available to the Victorian youth AOD sector.

The project involves the development of an evidence based framework for screening and assessment, including the pilot and evaluation of new AOD screening and assessment instruments, as well as the provision of training. Collaboration and consultation are key strategies of the project.

Funding body: National Health & Medical Research Council

Young people in out-of-home care (OoHC) in Victoria have experienced a range of traumas and adversities. They are vulnerable to mental ill-health and associated problems with relationships, education and meaningful activity. Longer term they have higher rates of a range of mental health and substance use disorders, and are at greater risk of homelessness and other significant social problems. While these poor outcomes have been demonstrated repeatedly, mental health services have been slow to respond.
