Marriage equality is about people. It’s about the young people we support, our friends, families and work colleagues. It’s about Same Sex Attracted people who want the choice to marry, just as other people in our communities.
And, we are thrilled to learn of this morning’s yes announcement. It is great to see that much of Australia shares our vision of a community where all young people are valued, included and have every opportunity to thrive. This message has been sent to young people and all in the LGBTIQ community through today’s announcement.
Our community agrees that ALL Australians are to be treated equally under the law including having full legal rights and the choice to marry the person they love. They have said “yes” to choice, “yes” to equal rights and “yes” to promoting the health and well-being of all people in our community be they YSAS clients, our colleagues or loved ones.
The “yes” outcome demonstrates a significant step forward for the LGBTIQ community. Drawing upon our own data in the YSAS Youth Needs Census, we know firsthand the impact this positive outcome will have on the lives of LGBTIQ young people in particular.
YSAS will continue to advocate for the needs of LGBTIQ young people, but today we celebrate this incredibly positive outcome – a historic day for our nation.
To note: cost free Marriage Equality Counselling Services are available to help young people and staff who have been affected by this prolonged debate.
