Assertive Street Outreach

In YSAS’s Assertive Street Outreach Program, community workers and nursing staff in the City North West and Dandenong Community Teams visit the streets and parks of inner metropolitan Melbourne, Dandenong and Springvale to engage with young people in the places where they congregate.

Outreach is often the first point of contact that young people have with a service. Outreach provides YSAS with the opportunity to establish connections and relationships with young people who may have little knowledge of YSAS services and the wider service system.

YSAS youth alcohol and other drug workers outreach to young people. They offer support relating to personal safety, monitor intoxication and overdose, help with health, accommodation and material aid needs. They provide harm minimisation strategies, information on drug-related harms (including the Needle Syringe Program) and help young people with mental health, social and legal problems.

The Assertive Street Outreach Program has networks and relationships with local schools and a variety of community agencies. Staff meet regularly with community organisations to improve referral pathways for young people in need of assistance.
